Google Launches Payment Protocol for AI Agents

Google has announced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) – a new open standard that enables AI agents to make purchases on behalf of users. More than 60 banks and retailers, including Mastercard, American Express, and PayPal, support the initiative.

AP2 is designed to create interoperability between AI platforms, payment systems, and vendors, while also ensuring a documented trail for each transaction. Users first provide an “intent mandate” (authorization to search and negotiate) and then a “cart mandate” (final approval). In certain cases, purchases can be fully automated – as long as clear parameters around price, timing, and terms are defined.

Google is also partnering with Coinbase, MetaMask, and the Ethereum Foundation to extend AP2 to cryptocurrency payments. Other players like Perplexity and Stripe are developing similar solutions, but AP2 is off to a strong start with broad financial backing.

For businesses, this development points to an emerging need to interact with customers’ digital agents – not just through traditional payment channels, but via secure and traceable protocols. This could significantly reshape the customer journey and introduce new demands for data structure and system integration.

Although AP2 has only just been launched as a standard, it is already open for implementation. This means both individuals and companies can start experimenting with the protocol now – for example, to automate purchases of software, subscriptions, or recurring deliveries.

The question is no longer if companies should prepare for agent-driven payments, but when. Given the strong financial backing, it seems likely that AP2, or similar standards, will play a central role in digital commerce in the coming years.
